The new Gremlins movie will be a "sequel style reboot" -- and will be set 30-years after the original Steven Spielberg-produced, Joe Dante-directed classic.
According to /Film, the project will not be a remake and will be developed by filmmaker Chris Columbus, although a director has not been confirmed yet.
Dante -- who helmed the 1984 original and the underrated Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) -- will not return for the reboot.
The report also insists that while there is still no release date for the film, Gremlins 3 will definitely happen.
Producer Columbus will work alongside writer Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg -- the duo who are also working on Beetlejuice 2 for Warner Bros.
Interestingly, Home Alone director Columbus has previously expressed doubt over the Gremlins compatibility with CGI.
He said: "I think it’s impossible to recreate [it] in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets, in a sense, and you don’t want to lose that sense of anarchy that those Hremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life."
Steven Spielberg is reportedly exec-producing the project and original lead Zach Galligan has shown an interest in reprising his role as Billy Peltzer. However the report suggest that the film will center on a young child, who is given a mogwai as a pet, leaving little room for Galligan’s character in the reboot.
Stay tuned for more Gremlins 3 developments.
