Sometimes you come across a piece of movie news that sounds so outlandish that you tell yourself “no way” or “is this a joke?” After checking to make sure that it’s not April’s fools day and no one denies it you start to formulate a billion questions. Ok, maybe it’s just me that has an endless parade of questions, but lets get to the news and then all my questions.
Deadline is reporting that Quentin Tarantino has pitched a Star Trek film idea to J.J. Abrams and Paramount is now developing the movie. According to the report, a writers room is now being assembled to start putting the movie together and that if it gets through the development stage, Tarantino may direct the film with Abrams producing.
Now let the speculation begin!
Right off the bat you have to wonder what this means for Tarantino’s “10 films and done” mantra. Up to this point, the director has said he plans to make ten movies before retiring. So does that mean Star Trek may be his final movie? I don’t think so. What all of his other films have in common is that he both wrote and directed them while this movie seems to be on track to be penned by other writers. It makes you wonder if he still plans on directing films after the “10th movie by Quentin Tarantino”. As far as I understand it not being both the writer and director of a film means that you can’t credit the movie “a Quentin Tarantino film,” which may mean that he may not quite be done directing movies at all.
As for what it could be about, your guess is as good as mine. Just before Star Trek: Beyond premiered, it was announced that the fourth Star Trek outing would bring back Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk’s father. Could it be that this movie isn’t happening? Possibly, especially now that Abrams is returning to a galaxy far, far away with Star Wars: Episode IX. Another possibility is that Paramount is hoping to film these movies practically back-to-back. Or maybe Tarantino pitched a movie that has nothing to do with Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew.
I can’t help but also try to wrap my head around what a Tarantino Star Trek film would even be like. As hard as I try, for the life of me, I can’t. All I can say is that if this happens, it won’t be like any Star Trekwe’ve ever seen. And that’s both incredibly exciting and just a tad bit terrifying.
