There are types of films that I am not a fan of. Horror movies can be pretty dumb, and not in a fun way (see: Thankskilling for a hilariously awful horror film), while found footage shaky-cam movies tend to be pretty obnoxious. As Above/So Below is a shaky-cam found footage horror film.
This bodes ill.
The film wasn’t on my radar all until I saw an extended trailer at the San Diego Comic-Con where Legendary premiered an extended red-band trailer for As Above/So Below. Now they’ve released it to the masses online exclusively to Yahoo and it can be view it below:
Here’s the synopsis for As Above/So Below:
Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers venture into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies with this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror.
As Above/So Below: Horror film, check. Shaky-found-footage-cam, check. Sounds like a million other films that have been released over the last few years– and yet– it piques my interest.
Maybe it’s because I’ve been in the catacombs underneath Paris, and was sufficiently creeped out by the sheer amount of bones down there. Only part of the catacombs is open but you would not believe how long it takes to go through it and most of the bones are hidden behind a wall of piled up femur bones that’s close to six feet tall.
From what I saw in the trailer, they either got permission from the city of Paris to shoot part of the film there or they made a very realistic set based on it. The first doorway you walk through does indeed say “Stop, for this is the empire of the dead”, it’s pretty creepy.
The one thing that really gets me about this trailer is that what is hunting the characters are their pasts. Big scare horror films don’t do it for me, but creepy psychological films get me every time and this film looks to deliver that in spades.
I’m still not convinced that the found footage route is the way to go with this film. Then again, the found footage route is an overused hook, and should have been a one-trick pony as far as I’m concerned (The Blair Witch Project), but I don’t get to set policy in Hollywood so really, I have no say.
One last bit of trivia, the photos that accompany this article are not from the movie but from the catacombs in 2005 when I was last in Paris. Here’s my creeped out face for good measure.
