Steven Spielberg has had his hand in television series for years with current shows Falling Skies, and the new Halle Berry television series Extant. Now it looks like Spielberg will be mining his previous films to develop another television series.
The Wrap is reporting that Spielberg is in the early stages of developing a Minority Report TV series. Based on the popular 1956 Phillip K. Dick short story of the same name, Spielberg originally directed a film starring Tom Cruise back in 2002. I enjoyed the film, but like all Phillip K. Dick stories developed for film (except, of course, for Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly) it deviated from the source material quite a bit.
The new series will be written by Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein and produced by Amblin Television. While we have no word on whether it will pick up where the movie left off, or it will be reimagined for television, we can pretty much guess that it’ll be an adaptation as opposed to a sequel to the film.
The basic idea behind both the film and the short story is that there are three mutants who posses precognitive powers. They can see into the future to determine if someone is going to commit a murder or crime before they do it. They call this pre-crime, and the guilty party is punished before the crime is commited. However sometimes only two precogs see the same future, which is called a majority report, while the third has a dissenting view called a minority report.
In both book and film, the main character John Anderton is convicted of a precrime murder, and is on the run trying to piece the clues together of the crime he is convicted of committing in the future. I don’t think that this will be part of the series, at least from the get-go, but it will be more of a police procedural similar in style to Person of Interest on CBS.
Spielberg is expected to look for a name actor to play Anderton in the same way Halle Berry was cast in Extant. The number of episodes and the network it will appear on are up in the air, but Amblin has had dealings with a lot of broadcasters, so take your pick.
As of right now Borenstein is currently working on the Skull Island screenplay for Legendary Pictures, and will more than likely work on the Godzilla sequel scheduled to be released on June 8, 2018. While Borenstein is reported to be writing for the series, there’s no word on who will be showrunning the series.
