There are a few shows I watch religiously. Game of Thrones and Doctor Who are two of them, but the longest standing show I’ve never missed an episode of (I think… I’ll get back to this point in a bit) is Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters. I still remember watching the original JATO Rocket Car pilot episode as if it were yesterday.
Originally it was just Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman who would bust the myths but as the series progressed the supporting cast members started gaining some prominence, originally called the build team and then later becoming full Mythbusters. They would be brought on to help build the larger contraptions Adam and Jamie would design but eventually were spun off into their own mythbusting segments.
As of the season finale, the members of the build team (Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara) have been abruptly let go of the show — and by abruptly, I mean literally at the end of the episode, Jamie and Adam just quickly dropped the bomb and the episode ended. Here’s a transcript of how Adam let the audience know:
This is the very last episode of MythBusters to feature the incredible trio of Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara.
I want to take a moment to thank you guys for the incredible work over the last 10 years. You’ve given literally your blood, sweat and tears in the name of science, and it has been a total pleasure not only to work with you but to call you our friends.
The reasons they gave for letting the trio go is due to them wanting to return to their roots and show more of the build process of busting the myths. Both Jamie and Adam have been saying for months that they want to return Mythbusters to showing more of the process that gets left on the editing room floor but no one expected that meant letting go of Kari, Grant, and Tory.
Some fans speculate the change in format is because the ratings for the show, while still strong, are stagnating, and they need something to keep the show fresh. Personally, I think the ratings have more to do with never knowing when the show is going to start up again, and at what time and even which day. If I didn’t try to keep up with Mythbuster news online, I’m sure I would have missed a bunch of episode s– I’m not even sure if I have missed episodes because of how hard it is to keep up with its release schedule.
In the end, I’m actually happy about this change. While I’ll miss Tory, Kari, and mostly Grant?(because his solution to everything was “build a robot”), I’m looking forward to seeing more of the process Adam and Jamie do behind the scenes. There aren’t enough minutes in an hour long show to show both teams builds.
It’s what I loved about the show originally and I hope to see more of it. Now if only Discovery can give us a regular schedule for the show…
What do you think? Is this a good change for the show or will you stop watching now that the build team is no longer a part? Let us know in the comments below!
