Action icon Sigourney Weaver has turned down the chance to lead Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables spin-off The ExpendaBelles.
The Aliens actress was reportedly Sly’s number one choice to lead the all-female gang of heroes – in a reverse of his popular testosterone fuelled franchise.
According to THR, Oscar nominated Weaver was officially approached but decided against the project.
Here is a synopsis (via Geek Nation):
When America's Navy SEALs are wiped out trying to penetrate the island lair of a deadly despot who has captured one of the world's top nuclear scientists, it becomes clear that there is no such thing as the right man for the job and that this is a mission so impossible that only women can handle it. The only way in: some of the world's deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls shipped in by private plane to satisfy a dictator--and instead save the scientist and the day.
The news that Ghostbusters star Weaver was not interested in taking part in the formulaic action series is not really surprising.
Despite The Expendables movies taking over $600 million and counting at the worldwide box office, the films have not faired well with critics. In fact, the third film, which was released this summer, has performed poorly both critically and commercially.
The success of the franchise has rested on its ability to attract big names from the 1980s -- aka the golden age of action movies. With Weaver declining the project -- Stallone will have to work hard to get a lead actress of similar credentials.
