One of the biggest movies of next year is The Avengers: Age of Ultron. The first Avengers film was so well received and did such phenomenal business at the box office, that a sequel was a no brainer. Just like the first Avengers, the sequel brings together Thor, Captain America, Hulk, and Iron Man to battle an adversary none of them could battle alone.
Only this time, it’s a villain of their own making. Empire (via CBM) had a chance to speak with both director Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about Avengers: Age of Ultron. On the titular opponent and the mood bedind the film, Whedon had very little to say:
It’s more epic and in other ways it’s more noirish and suspect and devious and specific. Ultron… he’s got a touch of the apocalypse in him.
Feige was a bit more forthcoming. The interlocking posters that Marvel premiered at Comic-Con 2014 paint a general overview of the next film:
Ultron was the villain Joss wanted, from midway through production on the first film, to have serious repercussions for the Avengers. We unveiled a poster here which is nothing but Ultron after Ultron after Ultron clawing at the beginning to defeat all of our Avengers. That’s what a lot of this movie is about.
The big question is, of course, the Hulkbuster Iron Man armor. Ever since the art first appeared in the ABC Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe special, fans have been clamoring for more information. Feige describes it plainly:
It’s a bespoke suit. The back-up plan in case things go awry.
Nothing we didn’t already know. In a reversal, Whedon does open up a bit more on the suit than he did on Ultron’s role in the film:
The Hulkbuster is from after my time [as a reader -- issues 304-305, vol. 1, part of 'Crash & Burn' by Len Kaminski and Kev Hopgood], but even I knew what a big deal it was. It makes sense because there’s no one who can really go up against Hulk, but more importantly, those guys are best friends, so what that battle is and what it means is fascinating to me.
That at least reveals an interesting point I was curious about. While the art showed Hulk vs. Iron Man, I wasn’t sure if Tony Stark would be in the suit or if it was Ultron taking control of it. Looks like Stark is indeed in there. But why are they fighting? That’s the million dollar question!
Take this one with a grain of salt — apparently This is Infamous has verified through two of it’s sources that the third Avengers film will be called Avengers: Infinity. If true, then it’s pretty much assured that the third film in the Avengers series will finally deal with Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet who has been operating in the background.
This is Infamous admits that it’s a working title only and it could change at any time but it points towards the plot of the third film. Most people have suspected the third film will be about the Infinity Gauntlet– but that’s pretty much everyone, including me, who suspected the second Avengers film would be about the same thing, and we were so wrong on that count.
Lastly, check out Hawkeye’s new suit, courtesy of Empire (via Ain’t It Cool News). Looks pretty cool!
Avengers: Age of Ultron will premiere May 1, 2015.
