It’s no secret that the world wants a Black Widow movie. And even though Marvel has decided that origin films aren’t necessary anymore, the fact that Scarlett Johannson’s Lucy has made over $200 million worldwide in just a few weeks, and is second only to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy… well, that may prompt Kevin Feige to change his mind, or at least put a stand alone Black Widow film back on the fast track. And Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall is pushing to be the one who brings it to the silver screen.
"I think I'd like to do a big movie with a strong female lead, whether or not she would be a superhero. (But) I would love to do a Black Widow movie." – Neil Marshall to Vanity Fair
Marshall has kind of a crush on the Russian assassin turned Avenger, telling Vanity Fair that he found her character to not only be really interesting, but down right perfect. Marshall added that “… she doesn't have any superpowers, she just has extraordinary skills, and the world that she comes from, being this ex-K.G.B. assassin, I find that really fascinating …" And it’s hard not to disagree with him. Johannson makes the character of Natasha Romanov extremely disarming, so when she throws that roundhouse kick, you never really see it coming. And her dry wit provides some good levity that’s human and not … well, comic book like.
Marvel President Kevin Feige has been hopeful to bring a Black Widow film to the big screen, even earmarking Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Perlman to write a script for it back in 2010. So even then he knew that a BW film could work. But the only question was, could Johannson (who has done great work in a supporting role film Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Avengers), be able to carry a film all by herself. And Lucy seems to have answered that.
And Marshall brings a dedicated audience – most of which are already fans, most likely – and being from the phenonemonally successful series for HBO, it’s hard not to say that he can’t make the jump back to features (Marshall has both The Descent, and Centurion to his credit). In addition, Marvel has enjoyed working with GOT directors in the past, with Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor bringing in the follow-up, which frankly I liked better than the original.
So what it really comes down to right now is… if Johannson wants to leave her newborn baby to make Black Widow so soon after wrapping Age of Ultron. Right now, her only other production is voiceover work on Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book, and a rumored affiliation with the Coen Bros.’ Hail, Caesar. And then there’s likely to be a Lucy 2. Either way, Marshall’s ready if he has his way.
