Despite Pixar’s remarkable record in Hollywood, the animation studio is not infallible. Case in point, The Good Dinosaur, which was supposed to be the Disney owned company’s 2014 offering.
However following the departure of director, Bob Peterson, the release was pushed back until November 2015.
Now star John Lithgow – who voices the character poppa dinosaur alongside Frances McDormand’s Momma dinosaur – has revealed that the story has been completely changed.
He said (via Collider): "I recorded the entire role in Good Dinosaur. They have now dismantled it and completely reimagined it, and it is a fantastic new story. So I'm gonna record again on it within the next month. Don't worry. It's coming and it's gonna be better than I ever imagined."
While this could indicate a crisis at Pixar, in reality it shows that the company behind Toy Story is completely uncompromising and will not release a film which they are not happy with.
Lithgow added: “But me and Frannie McDormand, we're still playing Momma and Poppa dinosaur.”
This admission suggests that while he and Oscar winner McDormand’s roles have not been changed – others most certainly have.
Other cast members include SNL’s Bill Hader and Doogie Howser himself Neil Patrick Harris. There are still no exact details on the story and casting changes, as well as the identity of the new director.
Here is the original synopsis:
“The Good Dinosaur” asks the generations-old question: What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? In theaters May 30, 2014, the film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively 70-foot-tall teenage Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event rattles Arlo's tranquil community, he sets out on a quest to restore peace, gaining an unlikely companion along the waya young human boy named Spot.
