Black Panther, Captain Marvel Updates From Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige

Two of the most talked about Marvel properties that fans want to see finally hit the big screen are Black Panther and Captain Marvel. These are two characters that we’ve been hearing about for a few years, with rumors that Carol Danvers would be part of Guardians of the Galaxy (obviously, that was bogus). Even the legendary Stan Lee has said in the past that Black Panther is in development.
Just last week there were rumblings Katee Sackhoff was in the running to play Danvers, but that turned out to be misunderstood. Doddle’s own Senior Writer James DeRuvo has all the details on that right here, if you’re curious.
That’s all nice and dandy, but what does Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have to say on all this? Surprisingly, quite a bit. IGN sat down with him and asked him directly about both Captain Marvel and Black Panther – here’s what he had to say:
They’re both characters that we like, that development work has been done on, is continuing to be done on. And certainly, the public, it’s a question I get asked more than anything else. More than Iron Man 4. More than Avengers 3. And that’s sort of the first time that’s really happened to us, so I think that makes a difference. I think that’s something that we have to pay attention to.
I’ve always said we have our plan, and it’s served us very well, and there hasn’t been anything that has made us deviate or change from that based on an opinion, because opinions online change, and they alter, and they are based on sort of limited information they have to what’s going on behind the scenes. But in this particular case, I think it is a groundswell, and I think it means something substantial.
Marvel has a slew of dates ready and available to release either or both of those projects up to 2019. More than that, and Feige touched on this in the IGN video, is Marvel Studios has a release map scheduled up to 2028 — a full 14 years from now. As of 2017, Marvel is releasing three films per year, instead of its current two-films-per-year schedule. That means there’s now 37 (or more) untitled projects between now and the end of that map, so it’s pretty much a guarantee that two of those films will definitely be Black Panther and Captain Marvel. With Feige’s admission that they are actively being developed, the only question left is whether we will see these films in Phase: Three or Phase: Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I for one, am hoping for sooner rather than later.
