Buddy cop movie Bad Boys will return for a third installment, according to star Martin Lawrence.
The comedic actor, who confirmed the news to Conan O’Brien last week, starred alongside Will Smith in the first two films for Sony, which were produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Michael Bay.
While there has been speculation about Bad Boys 3 -- especially with Bruckheimer parting company with family-friendly studio Disney — Lawrence revealed that a script is in development.
He said: "I believe so, yes. I just spoke to Jerry Bruckheimer yesterday and he said it’s real. They’re working on the script. They’re getting close to this. It all looks good."
The first movie grossed a massive $141.4 million worldwide in 1995, on a modest $19 million budget, while the sequel garnered $273.3 million worldwide in 2003, from a more substantial $130 million outlay. However, Bad Boys 2 received universally bad reviews, and epitomized everything which is wrong with a Bay/Bruckheimer film. Or most anything by Bay.
And although Bay has since developed his own brand of over-the-top cinema, Top Gun producer Bruckheimer revealed to Digital Spy in June that he hoped to persuade the Transformers director to return to the franchise.
He said: "We’d love to get Michael Bay [but] he’s very busy right now. Hopefully we can twist his arm and get him in there."
No word on co-star Will Smith, who declined joining the Independence Day sequels, and seems to be leaving blockbusters for a while.
Since Bruckheimer’s acrimonious departure from Disney - Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be his final project with the studio -- it seems the famed producer is feeling rather nostalgic.
Indeed, along with Bad Boys 3 at Sony, the producer is also developing Top Gun 2 and Beverly Hills Cop 4 at Paramount Pictures, where he now has a deal.
Here’s what he had to say on those two projects back in June -- regarding the Top Gun follow-up, he said: “It’s been in the works for 35 years. We really want to make it, Tom is engaged and so is Paramount, so we hope we can bring it to an audience shortly.”
And on Eddie Murphy reprising his role as cop Axel Foley, he added: "Eddie’s committed to do it, so is Paramount, we have Brett Ratner to direct it – a wonderful director – so we’re looking forward to getting started either this fall or after the beginning of the year.
“It’s been a long time since the last one, so hopefully we can bring something exciting to the audience.”
No word yet on a?Bad Boys 3 release date, but if we had to guess, probably 2016 or 2017. Beverly Hills Cop 4 debuts March 25, 2016.
