Beetlejuice 2 is being resurrected from cinematic limbo with an official release date reportedly on the way.
Original stars Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton have previously spoken about the sequel, with director Tim Burton and writer Seth Grahame-Smith (Dark Shadows) working on a script.
And now after months of speculation, the project – which will be a direct follow-up to the 1988 original – looks to be moving forward.
While speaking with MTV, Batman star Keaton confirmed that he has recently spoken to Burton about the movie.
He said: “I’ve e-mailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff until relatively recently. I always said that’s the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another.
“Now it looks like he is involved. And without giving too much away, we’ve talked to each other, and e-mailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.”
Beetlejuice was Tim Burton’s second feature as a director, grossing a respectable $73 million from a $15 million budget upon its release in 1988.
The story centered on dead couple, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who employ Keaton’s antagonist to get rid of a family who are living in their home.
Speaking to EW (via Metro) back in 2011, writer Grahame-Smith insisted the sequel would center around the title character.
He said: "The star of the movie has to be Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and it's a true continuation 26 years later.”
