Ant-Man is one of the longest in development Marvel films to date and has gone through some recent, let’s say, upheavals. Director Edgar Wright had been developing the film with screenwriter Joe Cornish for almost a decade, until he abruptly left due to creative difference over the project.
The rumor is that after turning in a final script to Marvel, due to notes in order to tie-in aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel (or Disney, depending on the rumor you’re reading about) had another draft written without consulting Cornish or Wright. Eventually Marvel found a replacement director in Peyton Reed with another script pass by Adam McKay.
Possible spoilers beyond this point!
According to Latino Review, they were able to get their hands on or at least a description of an earlier screenplay (presumably by Wright and Cornish) that describes a prologue for the film. This may be one of the elements Marvel asked Wright to put into the Ant-Man screenplay and it features some interesting characters from Captain America: The First Avenger.
The site says there’s a meeting that happens between a young Hank Pym, Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Armin Zola (Toby Jones) and a young Alexander Pierce (played by Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier). LR goes on to speculate that this could tie into the Agent Carter television series slated for January 2015. Again, this is an earlier draft so it could have been written out along the way– and that’s if Latino Review’s source isn’t bunk.
What I find interesting is that Agent Carter will premiere months before Ant-Man hits theaters so this wouldn’t be our introduction to the characters or the show. It would also make Michael Douglas’ character around 80 or 90 if it takes place around the first season of Agent Carter.
Another thing to look out for is that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has said that the development of Ant-Man impacted the Avengers. Here’s what he told Empire Magazine (via Latino Review):
We changed, frankly some of the MCU to accommodate this version of Ant-Man. Knowing what we wanted to do with Edgar and with Ant-Man, going years and years back, helped to dictate what we did with the roster for Avengers the first time. It was a bit of both in terms of his idea for the Ant-Man story influencing the birth of the MCU in the early films leading up to Avengers.
Could this be part of that? I’ve had a feeling since we first heard that Michael Douglas would be playing Hank Pym and Paul Rudd playing the Ant-Man successor Scott Lang that we’d learn Hank Pym was the person who came up with the idea of The Avengers. In the comics, the concept of working as the team was Pym’s idea. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe Nick Fury never takes credit for the Avengers Initiative and even calls it a “good old-fashioned notion”. I believe this would be the scene that reveals that.
And who knows, maybe we’ll get Hank Pym’s Ant-Man as part of Agent Carter season 2.
Ant-Man premieres in theaters July 17, 2015.
