If you thought that Marvel would keep it safe after their hugely successful gamble on Guardians of the Galaxy, you would be sadly mistaken. Probably.
Seems to be that Marvel Studios is fast tracking The Inhumans for a possible Phase: Three release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Collider is reporting that newcomer Joe Robert Cole has written an Inhumans screenplay that Marvel is happy with and plans to shop it out to filmmakers.
The idea is apparently to develop the film the same way James Gunn developed Guardians of the Galaxy. The original screenplay was written by Nicole Perlman, as part of Marvel’s writing program, which attracted Gunn to the project and to rewrite it. Apparently the structure remained the same, but Gunn added the flourishes to it. Looks like that’s what they’ll be doing with The Inhumans.
A log line for the screenplay surfaced a while back which described the project as:
The Inhumans are aliens who were put on Earth as sleeper cell aliens to eventually call back their race to take over the planet. Ultimately, the group of aliens fully assimilates and don't want to cause war.
Those aliens, by the way, are called the Kree and if that sounds familiar it’s because two of the antagonists in Guardians were also Kree: Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer. Although in the comics the Inhumans are genetic experiments on primative humans by the Kree as opposed to actually aliens. By immersing themselves in a Terrigen mist the Inhumans receive powers almost at random. Sometimes those mists turn an Inhuman into a deformed monster– I’ll get back to that in a bit.
If you need further proof that the Inhumans is a priority at Marvel, look no further than Vin Diesel’s page on Facebook from a few days ago:
It should be noted that Vin Diesel originally met with Marvel about being part of a different project before being given the job as the voice of Groot. He told The Hollywood Reporter he met with Marvel over:
A fresh IP (intellectual property) that would come out in 2016 or 2017, and potentially launch the third phase.
We already know that Ant-Man is launching Phase: Three, followed by Captain America 3 on May 6, 2016, and that would peg a possible Inhumans film in one of the three available available 2017 dates that Marvel revealed last month.
Collider also says their sources revealed that Marvel is planning on building a multiple-film cosmic universe that exists within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Going back to the Inhumans deformed monsters, it’s been theorized by many fans that the character Skye from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is an Inhuman herself, which would fit into the description of her parents as monsters (and Kyle MacLachlan recently cast as her father). And that blue guy in the tube who brought Coulson back to life is probably a Kree, which explains why it’s blood had no side effects on Skye whatsoever.
The larger Marvel Cinematic Universe seems poised to become even larger.
