If you’re a fan of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, then the first thing that should pop into your mind after reading the headline should be “Krang.” For those of you who are just starting to catch up on your Ninja Turtle lore, then let me bring you up to speed.
In the cartoon series, Shredder had a partner in crime from another dimension (or galaxy… there is some debate) named Krang. He hails from Dimension X, where many of the enemies the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles face in the comics and television series. Dimension X, however, has never been used in any of the films, and there’s quite a lot of lore behind it.
Our friends over at Screen Rant sat down with TMNT director Jonathan Liebesman and producers Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form to ask them about Dimension X, and if it would play a part in the greenlit sequel. Liebesman’s reply was… well, check it out below:
Dimension X? F*ck yes. I would love to. I mean it’s not up to me. It’s up to all of us to decide.
–Jonathan Liebesman
That’s a fairly tempered response.
The enthusiasm for exploring some of the stranger aspects of the Ninja Turtles mythos is really promising to me and the idea of finally having the Technodrome on the big screen is exciting — but what are the odds that the producers would be on board? Turns out, the odds are pretty good, seeing as they used some of those concepts in earlier drafts of the script. Fuller and Form told Screen Rant that:
We've talked about those worlds already.
–Bradley Fuller
There are scripts that have been written for this movie that integrated those worlds into it already…
–Andrew Form
Obviously, these ideas didn’t survive the development process. The reason was to focus the story as an origin movie for the Ninja Turtles.
They were just too… it made the movie a bit too unfocused for this particular story.
–Jonathan Liebesman
There were rumors that the early versions of the script pegged the turtles as aliens from another world. In the comics, TCRI, the corporation responsible for creating the mutagenic ooze, is eventually revealed to be extraterrestrial in nature. I have to wonder if the backlash against the rumors of the movie were a misunderstood idea where the filmmakers were actually trying to stay true to the source material.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 has been scheduled for a June 3, 2016 premiere date.
