Like all JJ Abrams films, the secrecy surrounding Star Wars: Episode VII is huge. Only a few insiders know what the story is about and who the new actors to the franchise will be playing. We know that Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford will be reprising their roles for Episode VII, but will they be hanging around for Episode VIII and Episode IX?
While we have no word on that, we have finally heard that at least one cast member will be around for all three installments… Deadline is reporting that newcomer Daisy Ridley has been confirmed for the sequels:
Well, she is the female lead in the JJ Abrams-directed resuscitation of Star Wars, and the plan is for her carry through to the second and third films that will be directed by Looper helmer Rian Johnson. – Deadline
We do know that Rian Johnson will be taking over the directors chair for Star Wars: Episode VIII, but the only thing that has been confirmed about his involvement in Star Wars: Episode XI is that he’s writing the treatment, and possibly the script. My guess is that if the brass at Disney and Lucasfilm like his plan for those installments, he’ll get the nod to direct both films, although with only 2 years between the installments, he may not have enough time to develop the films properly.
Unless he can convince Kathleen Kennedy to shoot the sequels-back to-back.
Possible spoilers ahead!
How does Daisy Ridley figure into all of this — well we don’t know for sure. Officially, we know that she’s a major character in the next trilogy, but other than that, Abrams has been tight-lipped. The rumors, however, have her pegged as Jaina Solo, one of Han and Leia’s twin children. Adam Driver is thought to take on the role her twin brother who becomse a Dark Jedi or Sith Lord, keeping the familial ties a core aspect of the new trilogy.
I suspect as the next few months roll on by, we’ll hear more of the other actors being signed on for the sequels. If the sibling rumors between Driver and Ridley turn out to be true, I’d be shocked if Driver isn’t in the next two sequels as well.
As for the original cast, if Han Solo makes it through Star Wars: Episode VII in one piece, I will also be shocked. Harrison Ford has wanted Han Solo to be killed off since The Empire Strikes Back, and has been wary to reprise his role as the smuggler for years. Could one of the conditions of him returning to the role be that he finally gets his wish? I’m fairly certain that if that’s the case, it’s likely written in his contract somewhere for Episode VII.
Star Wars: Episode VII premieres December 18, 2015.
