A Bourne sequel featuring both Matt Damon and Jeremy Renner will not happen anytime soon.
The release of the next Bourne film, featuring Renner’s Aaron Cross, has been pushed back to 2016, which inevitably lead to speculation of a crossover movie.
However producer Frank Marshall has denied the rumors, confirming that script and scheduling issues are behind the set back, nothing more.
He said (via THR): “It’s simply not true. (Director) Justin Lin is working with Andrew Baldwin on an Aaron Cross script/story that they pitched us a few months ago.
He added: “I talk to Justin all the time and the script is not ready. It’s a summer movie, and if we don’t start pre-production now, we can’t make next summer. Therefore, it’s a wise decision to move to 2016.”
Renner’s Bourne Legacy, directed by Tony Gilroy, grossed a modest $27 -million from a $125 million budget, and was given a lukewarm reception from critics.
Oscar winner Damon refused to reprise his role in Gilroy’s sequel, citing the poor quality of the script – something he stated publicly.
That lead the studio to quickly change the story, incorporating Renner’s character, crucially leaving the door open for Damon’s Jason Bourne.
As for Damon, his stance has not changed. When asked about returning to the role, the Good Will Hunting star confirmed that if a good script was developed, only then he and frequent collaborator Paul Greengrass (who directed Bourne 2 & 3) would return.
He said: “Look, I’ve been interested in doing another one for five years. We just can’t figure out the script. I’m up for it, but again it’s all about the script. It’s got to be a good one.”
He added: “I really want to do another one and I think Paul Greengrass does too. But I think it’s the same question we’ve had after each one. If we really feel we can do it and that it will deserve to live with the other three that we did."
