Deadpool Test Footage Excites Fans for Movie

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

There was going to be a Deadpool movie. But after he was ‘killed off’ in the mediocre X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and after the demise of DC’s Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, it seemed that Deadpool wasn’t going to get on the silver screen after all. Then visual effects maestro Tim Miller did this really cool, CGI-dominated test film that embraces all the humor and actions that Marvel fans hope would be in a movie. But is it enough to get Fox to pull Deadpool out of development hell? And then there’s the inconvenient issue of Deadpool’s demise, though at the end of the film, the decapitated Deadpool was still living.

Now while you’re no doubt asking yourself, “Hey, is that CGI?” I have to be honest, I wasn’t so sure at first … at least for some scenes. But it is, and it’s extremely well done. With the combination of extreme violence and some brilliant tongue-and-cheek humor, it really makes it both light hearted and thrilling.

Add to it the unlikely music soundtrack, and you have a juxtaposed motion comic that is out of this world. And it’s making Marvel fans drool with hope that even with Reynolds reprising the role, that Fox will make this movie. But it’s all but dead, even though at one point, Robert Rodriguez was interested in helming it. Tim Miller’s proof of concept, however, nails it. I think he could easily pull it off, because it’s clear he has a rapport with Reynolds and a grasp of the Deadpool character.

But the word on the street is that Fox doesn’t want to make a comic book film that isn’t PG-13 because of the precedent set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for that ratings bar. And a Deadpool movie simply couldn’t be anything nicer and remain true to the character and to itself.

And as the guys over at WeGotThisCovered suggest, the clock is ticking on making this happen. “Reynolds is born to play the role,” writes Matt Donato, “and once he passes a certain age, his superhero days will be over. The time to act is now.” And Donato may be right on that.

But it’s not like there isn’t anyone else who could fall into the role should Reynolds pass his expiration date. There’s always a quality actor around that could fill that role. Heck, if you think about it, Deadpool wears a mask anyway for most of the time. And if they end up using mocap, like they did for the test footage, Reynolds’ age won’t much matter.

What do you guys think? Could Fox (and Marvel) make a harder, R-rated super hero movie (or in this case, anti-hero movie) and it still be a blockbuster?
