One of the most talked about movies recently, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, has had its release moved for a second time.
The sequel to Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder, will now land in theatres with almost no competition on March 25, 2016. Yes, a massive summer movie will open in March. In recent years, March has become a big month for studios, with everything from Blade 2 and Resident Evil (2002) to Snyder’s own 300 (2007). All were decent-sized hits, and could easily have opened in the summer.
Initially, the film was supposed to hit screens on July 17, 2015, but the sheer size of the film caused Warner Bros. to push the film back to May 6, 2016. Ant-Man, incidentally, took over that spot, but imagine a year of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Batman v Superman, and Star Wars: Episode VII!
However, it now seems like the studio are running scared, as the film has now been moved again, avoiding a direct clash with Marvel’s Captain America 3.
What makes this even more embarrassing for Warner Bros. is that the sequel is already filming, with a budget somewhere in the region of $200 million.
The cast of the film has earned headlines, most notably the addition of Ben Affleck as Batman.
There is no doubt that this is a hugely important project for Warner Bros. Not only has the studio risked the short term future of their two most lucrative properties -- Batman and Superman -- but they have also rushed the development of the project, a long-in-development Justice League film. ?Now Warner Bros. clearly do not want to leave anything to chance, and that includes going up against the well oiled Marvel juggernaut.
Stay tuned for more Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice news. Again, the film opens March 25, 2016.
