A Geek's Reaction To The Theory Of Everything Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

I’ve been doing these ‘Geek’s Reaction‘ articles to genre films for a number of years now, but I want to take you, dear reader, on a slightly different path today. Instead of a comic book movie trailer or a science fiction trailer, I want to cover a biopic.

The film is called The Theory of Everything, and it centers around Stephen Hawking, one of the most prominent scientists of all time. Most of all, however, it’s a movie about life and love more than it is about science. Check out the trailer:

I love a good space opera. Star Trek has been a huge staple in my media diet since I was seven, and it made me want to learn about the universe and our place in it. The book that opened the door for me was Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time, which became a bestseller.

More than that accomplishment, he met his future wife, was shortly diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his twenties, and was given two years to live. Yet he persevered, despite his illness and is one of the major minds behind black holes.

To me, it’s a wonder no one has made a movie about his life until now. It has everything you could want in a story, including love overcoming impossible odds. The Theory Of Everything trailer gives you a taste of the life he has lived from able bodied teenager to wheelchair bound cosmologist and everything he’s had to fight along the way to get there.

I’m not sure how many people would make it through life like he did, and I have no idea how I’d cope with that motor disease. The trailer does remind me of A Beautiful Mind, which starred Russell Crowe, but both Hawking and Nash did go through a similar crucible.

Like A Beautiful Mind, I expect this film to take liberties with Hawking’s life and what he went through. All biopics are fictional retellings of actual events, so if you go into a movie expecting them to get the details right, you’ll be let down.

Ultimately, this film exists to let people know that sometimes, when you’re faced with impossible odds, you might as well fight anyway. Fight because someone who loves you will be there for you, fight because surrender is not an option and fight because you’re doing it for yourself. After watching the trailer I got a bit teary-eyed and I hope you did too.

The Theory of Everything premieres November 7, 2014.
