This month sees the arrival of one of Marvel’s most ambitious movies to date, Guardians of the Galaxy.
Adapted from a little known comic, the blockbuster is being helmed by James Gunn, who previously directed the dark and quirky comedy Super.
But of course Marvel, and parent company Disney, know exactly what they are doing and have orchestrated a great promotional campaign.
And considering the great early reviews and box-office takings, and magnificent cast, the signs looks good for the film. In fact, Marvel has already tasked Gunn with developing the sequel.
In many ways, a movie about giant crime fighting turtles who love pizza is a little too high brow for Michael Bay.
The Transformers filmmaker, ably assisted by effects obsessed director Jonathan Liebesman, has adapted his epically dumb style to the 80s children’s pop culture phenomenon and the results are fairly predictable.
Indeed the movie will almost certainly be a huge success, despite everyone complaining how bad it is and so the circle of life continues.
Sylvester Stallone returns to the franchise which resurrected his career, and this time the cast is arguably one of the most impressive ever.
Joining the usual gang of grunting MMA stars and washed up 80s action heroes, are some actual A-listers, including Indiana Jones himself Harrison Ford, Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson and Stallone’s old box-office sparring partner Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is reprising his role as Trench.
For anyone who hasn’t seen the previous installments, the film is essentially the Dirty Dozen, but with a bigger budget and a softer edge.
The previous two films have collectively grossed nearly $600 million worldwide.
Considering the popularity of Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s first film, it’s surprising that the sequel hasn’t been given more attention.
The follow-up, much like it’s predecessor, is packed full of stars and also includes an original segment, with the other stores being adapted from Miller’s cult comic.
Reprising their roles from the first film are Jessica Alba,?Rosario Dawson,?Mickey Rourke, and?Bruce Willis, who are also joined by stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt,Eva Green and?Josh Brolin.
What made the first film so distinctive was the uncompromising adult subject matter which is seldom seen in 21st century Hollywood. Indeed, audiences responded well to the unconventional noir style and the comic book violence, with the film grossing $158 million from a $40 million budget.?Hopefully the sequel can live up to those lofty expectations.
