The long gestating and troubled Ghostbusters 3 evidently still has some life left in it.
Following the death of Egon actor Harold Ramis, and director Ivan Reitman’s subsequent decision not to helm the sequel, there are now reports that Paul Feig is set to take on the project.
Both Variety and THR have confirmed that the Bridesmaids filmmaker will direct a female orientated Ghostbusters movie, although both reports differ as to whether Feig’s film will be a reboot or a continuation of the current franchise.
I actually think a reboot with Feig, and presumably his hugely talented muse Melissa McCarthy, would be good news for the property.
Importantly, whatever the outcome, there will never be a proper Ghostbusters 3 – Bill Murray has refused to participate and Ramis has sadly passed away – a reboot, distinct from the originals, could breath new life into the franchise.
Following Feig’s hugely successful Bridesmaids, which received two Oscar nominations and grossed $288 million worldwide, the director and star McCarthy re-teamed again for The Heat, which was another big hit, grossing $229 million from a modest $49 million budget.
The pair’s next movie, Spy, is already in the can, and the consensus is that Feig is keen to take on Ghostbusters, although again reports differ as to what stage of negotiation he is at with studio Sony.
This news will inevitably not sit well with some fans of the series, but as I mentioned, there is no point in pining for some Frankenstein sequel which would only feature Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.
Feig has proved himself to be a good comedy director, who will hopefully be able to focus on something which has a smidgen of originality and a style of its own, rather than a sequel which is 20-years too late.
Stay tuned for more Ghostbusters reboot news.
