The latest Interstellar trailer dropped online today, and there’s no doubt that Christopher Nolan‘s homage to his childhood love of space exploration is going to be huge. Because it’s not only going to appeal to the wanderlust in us all, but while it’ll have us looking up to the starts, it’s going to deliver an emotional punch in the gut. And if the trailer is any indicator, we’re going to love every bit of it.

“We used to look up in the sky and wonder about our place in the stars, now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.” – Interstellar
The new trailer focuses mainly on the epic odyssey that Cooper, played by Matthew McConnaughy must undertake with copilot Anne Hathaway and the rest of his crew, to pass through a newly discovered wormhole and find a habitable world when the earth he’s left behind is on the verge of dying. But he’s also leaving behind the family he loves and he doesn’t know if he’ll ever return in their lifetime.
The preview gives us a view of what the planet is that they find and that there may be danger when they arrive there. And it does fill you with wonder and a desire to see the film. But it also delivers an emotional punch to the gut as you realize that this kind of exploration comes at a tremendous price. And when the fate of the human race hangs in the balance, you have to think larger than your own needs and loves to the greater good. And that involves sacrifice.
If you don’t believe me, check it out for yourself. Warner Brothers hasn’t released it on YouTube or anywhere else online save Interstellar’s website. But it’s worth spending a few minutes to navigate over there and see it. And you have to access code 7201969. Why is that important? Because it’s the date that man set foot on another world … the date Apollo 11 landed on the Moon.
And if this film is anything, it’s an allegory of what man can do when he seeks the impossible. Sounds like an Oscar nomination to me. And I wouldn’t doubt it. Because already, without even seeing it, I’m adding this to the list of epic space opera movies like Apollo 13, 2001 Space Odyssey, 2010, and even Gravity from a popcorn munching, fun way to waste two hours point of view. But while Gravity had little story and tons of drama and eye candy visual effects, Interstellar looks to have meat. It takes us on a journey. And I for one, can’t wait to go on board when it hits theaters on November 7th.
