The Legendary panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con ended on a final surprise — namely that we’ll be getting a King Kong prequel by the name of Skull Island. Now it got a very confused reaction from the audience but I’ll get back to that in a second.
The big news is that Legendary has offered the directing job to Joe Cornish, who directed Attack the Block and worked on the Ant-Man script with Edgar Wright, before Wright left the project due to creative differences. Cornish has already turned down a few high profile gigs, including Star Trek 3, so it’s anyone’s guess whether he’ll sign up for the Kong prequel. Cornish would be an excellent director to take on the role but after what Hollywood did to his Ant-Man script, I can see him being wary to work on it.
What we do know for sure, however, is who is writing the project. Deadline is reporting that the film will be written by Godzilla scribe Max Borenstein. Legendary has also stated what the film’s goal is, in its press release:
Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions.
That explains why it’s called Skull Island, and not King Kong, which brings us back to the confused reaction to Skull Island in Hall H at the Comic-Con. There have been a few theories flying about, that people were expecting to see something from Jurassic World, or one of two long in the works Guillermo del Toro projects At The Mountains Of Madness or Hellboy 3, which GDT teased, but the truth is probably simpler than that.
People don’t remember what the island King Kong comes from is called.
My first-hand account of that panel is that people were excited during the footage being played, and they were cheering loudly when King Kong burst out of the jungle. When the title card finally showed up with the title Skull Island, that’s when the confusion kicked in. It seemed to me that most people weren’t sure whether that was King Kong or a King Kong knock-off.
In any case, Legendary is moving forward on the film and I’m looking forward to it. I hope it can clear away the mess that was Peter Jackson’s King Kong. But one thing that was a head-scratcher… Why didn’t Universal tease Jurassic World at Comic-Con? Star Chris Pratt was on hand teasing Guardians of the Galaxy, and Legendary is a co-producer…
Skull Island is slated for a November 4th, 2016 release.
