There are things you know will come back. Haley’s Comet, tax time, and Marvel Studio’s making another Iron Man film.
Iron Man 3 did incredibly well at the box office, making about $1.2 billion, so the question of a fourth installment of the series isn’t really a question. What are questions is whether Shane Black would be back for Iron Man 4 or the big one — whether Robert Downey Jr. will don the suit once more. Marvel has been pretty transparent that if he wants to move on, they’ll recast the role rather than retire the character, although part of what makes Tony Stark so enjoyable to watch is Downey Jr.’s take on him.
Entertainment Weekly sat down with RDJ during the Avengers: Age of Ultron shoot and asked if he specifically would return for Iron Man 4. He didn’t say one way or the other, but he made it sound like he’s very open to return. Here’s what he told EW:
It's down to Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios president] and Ike [Perlmutter, CEO of Marvel Entertainment] and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and that's on us to agree or disagree. When things are going great, there's a lot of agreement.
Right now, this has just been swell, hasn't it? This [The Avengers: Age of Ultron] has been a really good one and it feels good and we're having a good time. It's that thing of: Why give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed? Most people are saying that right when they get knocked out. The future is, as usual, uncertain.
While that sounds a bit far from a definitive answer, it does sound like he’s still very much enjoying the role and the people he works with. Downey Jr. is currently contracted for both Avengers 2 and?Avengers 3 before Marvel will need to renegotiate for any more films featuring RDJ as Iron Man. What I hope is that he’s being coy about reprising the role and Marvel will announce Iron Man 4 at the San Diego Comic-Con. Keep in mind that?RDJ is the highest paid actor, two years in a row, so Marvel will have to be smart with their deal.
That might sound like a pipe dream, but remember that Marvel announced release dates for a slew of films through May 2019. We don’t know what the titles are just yet, but you can be guaranteed to learn some, if not all of the titles will be revealed at the Marvel panel in Hall H on Saturday.
Of course, even if they announce that Iron Man 4 is on the slate, that doesn’t mean it will be RDJ in the suit. If the role were to be recast, it would be strange, because he is contractually obligated to appear Avengers 3, so we could technically get a situation where the new actor would appear in Iron Man 4, followed by Downey Jr.?in Avengers 3?and then continuing on with the new actor for Iron Man 5. It wouldn’t be the first time something like this has happened. After Sean Connery left the role of James Bond, the producers hired George Lazenby for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service before rehiring Connery for Diamonds are Forever.
Until we know for certain, you can catch Robert Downey Jr.’s next appearance as Tony Stark in Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015.
