Sony Moves Up Sinister Six, Postponing The Amazing Spider-Man 3 To 2018

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

Good news for Marvel fans hoping for a Sinister Six movie to get the green light, after an uneasy week that prompted many to speculate that Sony’s idea might just be dead, news has come out that the studio plans to postpone the The Amazing Spider-Man 3 until 2018, and will be green lighting Sinister Six to open in 2016. The result is giving Spider-Man a much needed respite, while bringing to the forefront a comic book franchise that was teased in the last chapter of Marc Webb’s Amazing series.

While the smart money is on Sinister Six featuring Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, and Dane DeHaan reprising their roles as Electro, Rhino, and Green Goblin, respectively, for the Sinister film, there’s no guarantee that Marc Webb will be part of the story, nor if he will return for TAS3. As of right now, he’s still onboard to helm it, but decided to opt out of The Amazing Spider-Man 4.

Even though Sony may have wanted The Amazing Spider-Man sequel to have performed better, it was obviously good enough to green light Sinister Six with Drew Goddard directing (he wrote the pilot script for Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil series), and move it up into the release schedule. But also, with ‘Spidey brain trusts’ Roberto Orci clearing the board so he can helm Star Trek 3 and also produce Power Rangers, and former producing partner Alex Kurtzman focusing on the Universal Monsters cinematic Universe, Sony may be playing it smart in order to give new blood time to work up the story. In the meantime, Marvel Studios (Avengers) have seized upon a date vacated by Sony… May 4, 2018, per /Film (part 3 bows later that year).

[We announce dates earlier] because of the competitive landscape. It's because if we don't announce dates soon, somebody else is gonna announce and then the weekends will be gone. So that was really the onus....In the big picture, we just need to get those flags planted. – Marvel announcing movies to 2019

But it does leave Sony’sThe Amazing Spider-Man on the bubble as it were, for not only chapter 3, but also chapter 4, which was to be released in the spot now occupied loosely by part 3 in 2018. It could be the studio realizes its ambitious plans of putting out a Spider-Man universe film every year isn’t smart, as with diminishing box office returns, audiences could be fatigued with your friendly neighborhood Web Head.

Though Spider-Man is a Marvel property, Sony has the producing and distributing rights, but as we said above, Marvel Studios quickly grabbed Sony’s early May 2018 date in their own ambitious release schedule. Last week, they announced an ambitious superhero lineup going all the way to 2019, with releases from 2016 to 2019 going untitled at the moment, as a kind of place holder (check out the films we think they could be).
