A Geek's Reaction: Star Wars Rebels Extended Trailer

A lot of people were fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and were bummed when that series was canceled. Lucasfilm and Disney hired the same creative team to work on a new computer animated series, Star Wars Rebels, based on the timeframe between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.
Frankly, I wasn’t that interested in a new series set in that time frame, and most of what I saw made me shrug my shoulders and go, “Eh, it looks okay, I guess”. I may just be tired that every Star Wars television series seems to take place somewhere between established films in the series.
Then this trailer showed up:
There’s no denying that the animators Lucasfilm hired to work on The Clone Wars are great, the thing that always felt off to me was the visual language of the prequel trilogy. The ship designs of the prequels just never felt like Star Wars to me.
The new Rebels trailer has both visual and audio cues directly from the original trilogy, and oh how I have missed them. As much as I’ve always been aware that these elements were missing from The Clone Wars and the prequel trilogy, I never realized how excited I am to really see them in action over a longer period of time.
With the San Diego Comic-Con here, I was saddened to hear that Star Wars: Episode VII wouldn’t have a presence this year. With rumors of the film being delayed past its December 18, 2015 release date due to Harrison Ford’s set injury, and subsequent brief shutdown, and the fact that JJ Abrams has really only started production on the film, I didn’t think there was much Star Wars to look forward to.
How quickly a trailer can change my mind.
Of course, this time next year, if Episode VII keeps i’s current release date, we should see a ton of new live action Star Wars goodies at SDCC. Episode VII will probably be deep into post-production at that point, and I’ll bet you, the lucky audience in Hall H, will get a sneak preview for the new entry. What remains less clear is whether the unrevealed Star Wars standalone film being directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) will have a presence at all. I have a feeling it won’t, but what we do get is a new Star Wars film panel every year from 2015 until the release of Episode IX in 2019. Josh Trank (the rebooted Fantastic Four) is directing the other spinoff film, while Rian Johnson (Looper) is helming Star Wars: Episode VIII.
There’s a ton of Star Wars coming our way and it all kicks off on the Disney XD channel with Star Wars Rebels premiering in the Fall of 2014.
