Following the lukewarm critical and commercial performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, rumors are flying around that all is not well at Sony.
The studio had announced plans for two sequels, plus two spin-off movies centering around villains The Sinister Six and Venom.
However, last week Latino Review’s Umberto Gonzalez, aka El Mayimbe, tweeted simply "RIP SINISTER SIX", which sent the blogosphere wild.
This comes after Amazing Spider-Man 2 co-writer and producer Alex Kurtzman, who is being lined up to direct Venom, admitted that plans for the expanded universe were still not entirely certain, per Collider. Kurtzman is now busy working on a Universal Monsters shared cinematic universe.
Kurtzman’s former writing and producing partner Roberto Orci recently left The Amazing Spider-Man 3, as he’s likely very busy working on Star Trek 3. It should be noted that both Kurtzman and Orci were hired by Sony to be the ‘Spider-Man franchise brain-trust.’
Still I would be shocked if Sony decided to scrap their spin-off plans. There are also suggestions that the Spider-Man franchise itself could rebooted again, which in my opinion would be unbelievably shortsighted.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2, directed by Marc Webb, was not a bad film, although its style was far too similar to Sam Raimi’s trilogy.
Indeed the sequel included some strong elements, including Dane DeHaan’s Green Goblin, who would be leading the Sinister Six spin-off movie, to be directed by Drew Goddard (who was working on the Daredevil Netflix series). The young actor is one of Hollywood’s most charismatic screen talents, and a film centering around him would be very exciting.
Judging by Kurtzman’s comments, the studio are still trying to figure how to schedule the raft of sequels and spin-offs; in fact he even likened the Sinister Six to Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch and French art house classic Wages of Fear.
He said (via Cinema Blend): “I am a crazy fan of movies like The Wild Bunch or Wages of Fear, where you're rooting for the bad guys. I think that's the opportunity that Sinister Six has to provide.”
As far as release dates, Sony has scheduled something for summer 2016, which could be The Amazing Spider-Man 3 or Sinister Six. But with diminishing box office returns from the first Amazing Spider-Man, the franchise could?ultimately be delayed by the studio, as it appears audiences may be growing tired of the Spider-Man franchise of films.
Stay tuned for more Sinister Six news.
