The cinematic appeal of World War 2 is unrelenting, and the latest subject to get the big screen treatment is genius code breaker Alan Turing and the fabled Enigma machine.
The Imitation Game stars Benedict Cumberbatch, as the unconventional hero, and judging by the trailer, the Sherlock actor goes all out in his portrayal of the legendary mathematician.
Supporting the British star is Keira Knightley, who is a fairly ubiquitous presence in Hollywood movies set in the UK. Indeed, it would be no surprise if she was the one and only name on the list of casting choices.
The rest of the cast is equally robust, including Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Allen Leech, Rory Kinnear, Matthew Beard, and Charles Dance.
The film will open this year’s London International Film Festival, and Norwegian director Morten Tyldum confirmed that he is delighted that the movie will be premiering at the event.
He said (via Digital Spy): “I am thrilled to be returning to London to shareThe Imitation Game with the audience of the BFI London Film Festival. The experience of directing this film has been so tremendously rewarding, and I am humbled to share Alan’s Turing’s incredible story on Opening Night.”
This isn’t actually the first Hollywood movie about the Enigma code breaking machine – which was fundamental in the fight against Nazi Germany – the other being Enigma (2001), starring Kate Winslet and Dougray Scott, which bizarrely opted for a largely fictional account of the story, which did not include Turing’s work.
However, this latest film is firmly about Turing’s genius, and is a celebration of his heroic efforts to halt the spread of malignant fascism across Europe in the 1940s. Sadly, Turing was arrested in the 1950s for being gay and was chemically castrated as a result. That of course is disgusting in any context, but for that to happen to a war hero, is an abomination and puts the events of the film in a completely different light. It will be interesting to see if that detail is included in the film.
