The relationship between Star Trek fans and directors has always been like landlord and tenant – in that filmmakers will come and go, but the property will always belong to Trekkers.
And while the last two films made a lot of noise at the box office, overall fans were not happy with JJ Abrams’ residency.
When the director left to take charge of Star Wars at Disney, Paramount Pictures appointed Abrams cohort and Star Trek Into Darkness writer Roberto Orci to helm Star Trek 3, much to the dismay of Trekkers around the world.
However, while speaking to IGN, Orci admitted that he only concentrating on delivering a great script, which he is co-writing with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, and hasn’t even thought about directing the film.
He said: “I’m still in the middle of writing the script with Payne and McKay, so I’m not scared yet about anything.
"We’re just trying to get through making a draft that the studio likes. So until they read a draft, nothing feels real to me. Right now it’s just, figure out the story. Then, suddenly, if they really do want to make this version of the movie, that’s when the fear starts to set in. The minute you’re green lit, that’s when it becomes real. Until they have the script it’s all just pie in the sky.”
This is most likely a case of Orci being cautious, as he is almost certainly lined up to direct the project.
Indeed it has recently been reported that he has left the development of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 over at Sony Pictures, which would further indicate that he is set to helm his first feature.
When asked about the story and if iconic villain Khan would return for the sequel, Orci insisted that his first priority was to make a standalone film, which is accessible to non-Trek fans, as well as something which fits into the mythology of the series.
He said: "We don’t want anyone to feel like they have to have seen the previous movies. It has to be a movie that stands on its own, that stands alone. So we’re hesitant to rely on any love of the series or love of previous stuff.”
