After 20 years of development limbo, Martin Scorsese’s Silence is officially happening.
Deadline has reported that Paramount, who has produced the Casino director’s last three pictures, will release the film in November 2015, which is prime hunting ground for Oscar nominations.
But the story behind Silence is far from straight forward. Based on Shusako Endo’s book, Scorsese agreed to direct the project back in the early 1990s, and then unofficially shelved the production, leading?producer Cecchi Gori to take legal action, forcing the legendary director to make the film.
The story centres on two Catholic Jesuits who embark on a mission to introduce Christianity to 17th century.
As with any Scorsese picture, the cast is impressive, with Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, Ken Watanabe, and Adam Driver set to star.
The 71-year-old director last film, The Wolf of Wall Street, was his most commercially successful to date, grossing nearly $400 million worldwide from a $100 million budget, despite having an R-rating.
Paramount is clearly eyeing award’s season, with the film strategically placed to pick up Oscar momentum, while avoiding the Christmas blockbuster rush.
Stay tuned for more Scorsese’s Silence developments, including more casting and filming news.
