Ever since ABC’s Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe television special teased some production art of Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster suit in a one-on-one fight with Bruce Banner’s the Hulk, we’ve been waiting to hear if this will indeed be part of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Radio Times was in London where Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige presented some new footage of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, and the second Avengers outing, including some unfinished footage of a fight between The Hulk and Iron Man.
The Guardians of the Galaxy footage was reported to be about their escape from the Kyln which is an intergalactic prison. The footage described was exactly what I got a chance to see in IMAX that Marvel released earlier this month. Check out this link for my geek’s reaction and review of that footage.
Other footage of The Avengers: Age of Ultron depicts Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Quicksilver, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who are locked in Perspex prison cells which we may have seen in the post-credits scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Later, Scarlet Witch is shown using her powers to lift blocks, and Quicksilver running but without the special effects inserted as of yet.
Another scene is described as Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch, fighting side-by-side on a ruined street in Italy. The description matches the first photos of Olsen and Taylor-Johnson in their respective roles.
Tony Stark’s Avenger Tower was also shown. Rebuilt from Stark Tower that Loki and his army of Chitauri did a number on in The Avengers, it exhibits twin laboratories for Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, as well as a landing pads for the Quinjet aircrafts.
Possible spoilers ahead!
At the end of The Avengers, both Bruce Banner and Tony Stark seemed to get along extremely well — so what would happen to pit these two characters against each other? If I were to guess, I would say that Stark is not in that Hulkbuster armor.
The rumored plot for Age of Ultron is that Tony accidentally creates the titular Ultron, somehow. Ultron is an artificial intelligence and it’s been surmised that he (it?) takes control of most or all of the Iron Man suits to fight the Avengers. Stark is smart (and conniving) enough to create individual suits designed to take down each Avenger, in case one went rogue. I’m pretty sure that Captain America, Thor, and Hulk won’t be too pleased by that revelation.
Guardians of the Galaxy blasts into theaters August 1, 2014, followed by The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015.
The Hulkbuster armor was co-created by writer Len Kaminski and artist Kev Hopgood.
