Billionaire Oscar winning icon Steven Spielberg is finding life in the Hollywood machine tough.
Indeed, even the Jaws director has been adversely affected by studios’ reluctance to fund original big- budget movies, meaning he has had a number of projects shelved in recent years. This is in the wake of recent box office bombs, like Johnny Depp’s Lone Ranger, which resulted in the delay of Pirates of the Caribbean.
One such project is a science fiction spectacular Robopocalypse, which was put on hold due to ‘scheduling difficulties,’ which is the studio equivalent of ‘it’s not you, it’s me’.
However while promoting CBS sci-fi show Extant, with EW, Spielberg discussed his interest in robots, and hinted that the long gestating project is far from extinct.
He said: “I can imagine a future with sentient robots. All my life, I’ve been interested in sentients, which are machines that can not only think, but also experience compassion. I’m working on a movie that really is about, how smart does a machine have to get before it turns against us and realizes in can out-smart us? It doesn’t need us anymore, and in fact, we’re getting in its way. And then it goes on a rampage to eliminate all biological organisms." That certainly sounds like the plot of the original Robopocalypse novel; despite the hold that started in January 2013, perhaps the movie may still happen.
The E.T. filmmaker is producing science fiction series Extant, which stars Oscar winner Halle Berry as an astronaut who returns to Earth pregnant, after a year in space.
And while Spielberg has achieved everything in Hollywood, he confirmed that he still takes a hands-on approach to everything his company Amblin produces.
He said: “Yeah, I read every script that my television company Amblin Entertainment develops. I've read every script on Extant, and I've sat in the writers' room occasionally to just sort of brainstorm. I don't break the stories.”
Extant debuted earlier this week on CBS. Stay tuned for more Steven Spielberg news.
