In 1993, I went to watch a movie with my best friend, without any parental supervision for the very first time. That movie was Jurassic Park, which did two things: it made me want to be a palaeontologist for about two months, and it gave me nightmares about being trapped in the park for the next few nights.
My brain cast Dan Akyroyd as Alan Grant, for some inexplicable reason in those dreams, but that’s beside the point.
It was the velociraptors that really scared the bejesus out of me, so when an Instagram pic of a full-size, animatronic raptor showed up (via fan site JurassicWorld.org), I got goosebumps. I am again a 12 year old sitting in a movie theater, waiting for the excitement and thrills of an island featuring escaped dinosaurs. Check out the image below which was captioned:
This is an actual Velociraptor for the upcoming film Jurassic World! #jurassicworld #dinosaur #universalstudios #StevenSpielberg #Velociraptor #HYPE
The muzzle on the raptor is probably not a muzzle at all, but rather a clamp to keep the puppet upright. I’ve had my problems with the direction Colin Treverrow is taking the film, but I absolutely love that they’re using animatronic dinosaurs again. The series, while known for taking CG to the next level, still had some of the most realistic puppets ever.
So when will we be seeing some velociraptors? Probably sooner than you suspect. Near the end of last month, Phil Tippett tweeted the following:
- taking something BIG out of storage – dusting off, polishing up, reconnecting w an old, 8-foot friend – see u at @Comic-Con .

Could this be what he was talking about? All signs point to yes although it sounds more like he’s bringing one of the original puppets as opposed to what they’re using on set. I also wonder if there will be somebody inside the suit walking around during a panel for the new Jurassic World. If you’re curious about the process of how they did the practical raptors, the Stan Winston YouTube channel has a great video about it here.
I’m hoping to get into Hall H at the San Diego Comic Con where I’d finally get to see one of these guys in person for the very first time and maybe have another nightmare or two afterwards.
Jurassic World hits theaters June 12, 2015.
