Guillermo del Toro Hopes To Make At The Mountains Of Madness With PG-13 Rating

By Mark Hodge (doddleNEWS)

Getting a big budget R-rated movie produced in Hollywood would test the sanity of any filmmaker.

Indeed, Guillermo del Toro has now accepted that if he is ever going to make his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s horror novella, At The Mountains Of Madness, he needs to compromise with a PG-13 rating.

The Pan’s Labyrinth director revealed to The Wall Street Journal, that the $120 million budgeted project, which was to star Tom Cruise and be co-produced by James Cameron, and was subsequently dropped by studio Universal because of its adult content, could be resurrected at ‘new home’ Legendary.

del Toro: “I said to them, that's the movie that I would really love to do one day, and it's still expensive.

"I think that now, with the way I've seen PG-13 become more and more flexible, I think I could do it PG-13 now, so I'm going to explore it with (Legendary), to be as horrifying as I can, but to not be quite as graphic."

He added: "Legendary was very close to doing it at one point, so I know they love the screenplay. So, we'll see. Hopefully it'll happen. It's certainly one of the movies I would love to do."

In fairness to Universal – and I wouldn’t normally say this – they were right not to back down over the adult rating. The horror genre is fueled by the teenage dollar, so making a hugely expensive movie which almost completely?shuts out that demographic with an R-rating would have been, well madness.

But now Legendary has a new deal with Universal, so At the Mountains of Madness could still happen.

Del Toro’s next feature is another Legendary-produced horror, Crimson Peak, which stars Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain. The filmmaker is also developing a sequel to his divisive blockbuster Pacific Rim, which Universal will now co-produce and release after Warner Bros. handled those duties on the first one.
