Over a week ago, Guillermo del Toro revealed that Pacific Rim 2 had been greenlit by Legendary and my reaction to that news was one of sheer geeky joy. Speculating what the sequel will be about has been a lot of fun, especially with del Toro saying that he wanted to go with some “very new, very crazy ideas" for it.
How much more different could he make the movie? We know that much of the original cast is returning and there’ll be more Jaegers fighting Kaijus, so where can del Toro and Zak Penn go from here? Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, he explained the process for coming up with ideas for the second film:
We are three years away, so to spoil anything would be fantastically silly of me. What I can tell you: [screenwriter Zak Penn] and I really went in, we started with [screenwriter Travis Beacham] about a year and a half ago, kicking ideas back and forth. And, admittedly, I said to Zak, let's keep kicking ideas till we find one that really, really turns the first movie on its ear, so to speak. (...) It was hard to create a world that did not come from a comic book, that had its own mythology, so we had to sacrifice many aspects to be able to cram everything in the first movie. Namely, for example "the Drift”, which was an interesting concept. [Then there was] this portal that ripped a hole into the fabric of our universe, what were the tools they were using? And we came up with a really, really interesting idea. I don't want to spoil it, but I think at the end of the second movie, people will find out that the two movies stand on their own. They're very different from each other, although hopefully bringing the same joyful giant spectacle. But the tenor of the two movies will be quite different.
There’s quite a lot of general ideas about what the sequel will be about, so let’s get into what del Toro adds to what (we think) we already know:
Possible spoilers ahead!
We know that two of the big ideas del Toro is playing around with is the fact that the character Newt drifted with a Kaiju in the first film, and there may be ramifications of that, and we may get a Jaeger (Gipsy Danger)/Kaiju hybrid in the sequel. Adding to that is the question of what tools are the aliens using to create the portal into our world?
Here’s my theory: because the aliens think in a hive mind, and “the drift,” which is used to control the Jaegers is in itself a sort of hive mind between two individuals, I have a hunch that the tools for opening the portal are also somehow associated with that.
Pacific Rim 2 opens in theaters April 7, 2017.
