Back in May, we reported that Community had been cancelled just shy of its ’6 seasons and a movie’ mark. While it was a good run, it seemed like it was time to say goodbye to the students at Greendale.
Except that creator Dan Harmon and Sony Pictures Television have somehow given the TV show new life through Yahoo Screen — this is the show that just refuses to die! Despite my love for Community, it’s always had poor ratings and its share of controversies, so I was always waiting for the ax to show up sooner or later.
I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, BangBus!
– Dan Harmon (series creator)
Kathy Savitt, Yahoo chief marketing officer, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the decision to bring Community to Yahoo Screen. She has been pushing the tech firm into long-form programming and said:
Yahoo has always been a place where people come every day to consume all kinds of content. This year we made a really significant and serious commitment to taking our large audience and becoming the platform for creators to find the audience that they want and need. It could be voices on Tumblr, or other young voices, or it could be brands really connecting them with a who new level of audience. Recently we announced our deals with Paul Feig to do an original sitcom, with Mike Tollin. We said, “This is just the beginning of some of these very select projects.” Today marks the next one we’re announcing: Community, which is an incredible show. It’s certainly the greatest example that I’ve seen in a long time of a story that has not only connected with an audience but deserves to have a huge platform to introduce new audience members to the power of the show.
Yahoo has been teasing longform programming since April, with announcement of projects from exec producers Paul Feig?and Mike Tollin?at the Digital Content NewFronts. Scooping up Community makes perfect sense for Yahoo… while the ratings have been small, it does have a loyal online presence, and those small numbers for television could mean big business online.
Season 6 of Community will air sometime this fall with 13 brand new episodes and without the restrictions of network television, so Harmon may add a bit more adult humor and swearing to the series. With any luck, next year they’ll green light a movie.
