The zombie genre has exploded in popularity in the last decade, leading to television shows, blockbusters movies, and even romantic comedies.
Now following in the footsteps of Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead (2004), comes Life After Beth, featuring Dane DeHaan as a love sick teenager whose girlfriend, Aubrey Plaza, is an undead flesh eater.
Here’s the trailer:
While most zombie movies deal with the dilemma of having a loved one transform into a brain munching humanoid, Life After Beth cleverly takes that conceit and runs with it. Indeed, judging by the preview, the transformation is gradual, meaning DeHaan’s character has to slowly come to terms with the fact that he and his girlfriend have ‘drifted apart’ in the most gruesome way possible.
Directed by Jeff Baena, the screenwriter behind David O. Russell’s underrated I Heart Huckabees (2004), the film includes an excellent cast including Anna Kendrick, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, and Cheryl Hines.
The film did divide critics at the Sundance Film Festival, most likely because the zombie genre is starting to reach saturation point.
However Dane DeHaan is one of the most watchable screen talents around at the moment and it will be interesting to see how he fares in a black comedy such as this. Parks and Recreation actress Plaza, who appeared alongside Seth Rogen in Judd Apatow’s Funny People (2009), was widely praised for her fantastic performance as Beth.
Life After Beth will be in selected cinemas on August 15th, and will also be available on DirecTV from July 17th. Check out two posters below!
