Mark Ruffalo’s take on Bruce Banner and the Hulk in the first Avengers was the breakout performance to finally take the character from the pages of Marvel to the big screen. For the next Avengers outing, he’s stated that his role has been expanded, a lot more complex and there’ll be a scene that will be as equally delightful as the puny god scene during the climax from The Avengers: Assemble.
There have also been rumblings of a solo Hulk movie, and despite the fact that the Planet Hulk storyline keeps cropping up, Kevin Feige and Mark Ruffalo always say that’s not the direction they want to go in.
Obviously, they could be lying about that.
Drew McWeeny of Hitfix put up an article about Marvel’s possible plans for a Hulk film. Before I go any further — there are massive spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron ahead.
Don’t say you weren’t warned.
During the climax of Age of Ultron, Bruce Banner finds himself stuck on a Quin jet headed off into deep space. The jet is preprogrammed so there’s no way off the ship for him except to wait for it to arrive at it’s destination.
If that sounds somewhat familiar, it’s because that’s more or less how the Hulk leaves Earth in the Planet Hulk comics. McWeeny goes further and using what he knows, makes a guess as to where a Hulk movie would fit between Age of Ultron and Avengers 3:
Here’s where I’d wager his spaceship is headed: wherever the Guardians of the Galaxy are located. If I was a betting man, I’d say there will be no Hulk solo film as part of Phase Three. Instead, Banner’s ship will take him to another planet, where he will end up meeting the Guardians and having an adventure with them. Hulk will definitely come out to play a few times. I suspect we’ll see some sequences that very much feel like they’re part of the Planet Hulk story, but that the larger story will be about the Guardians finding a way to get Banner home, only to end up going with him. That would move a big piece of the puzzle into place to get Thanos looking back at the Earth in time for the third “Avengers” film.
Interestingly, my guess for a Hulk solo film was similar to McWeeny’s. We could have a similar story as Planet Hulk but with Bruce Banner only turning into the Hulk during the gladiator matches– and he could meet Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy.
I suspect that McWeeny is on to something by having a Hulk/Guardians team up film that brings them into the fold for Avengers 3. The Planet Hulk storyline could be altered and truncated into the first act of that kind of film and then move on from there.
