My reaction– oh hell yes! That is all.
…
Oh all right, I suppose you want a bit more about what’s going on, and what it means. In case you haven’t heard, we’ve reported that Guillermo del Toro has announced a sequel to Pacific Rim, as well as an animated series. Here’s the word from Legendary:
Guillermo del Toro returns to direct Legendary Pictures' PACIFIC RIM 2, the next chapter of the epic action-adventure he created with 2013's hit original film. Zak Penn will write the script with del Toro. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni once again produce alongside del Toro, Mary Parent and Callum Greene. Jillian Share will executive produce. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX 3D.
Many people speculated that if del Toro got a chance to do a second film, it would be a prequel, but he’s already said that far more interested in a sequel. However, the animated series will pick up after the events of the comic books which detailed the original invasion of the kaijus so if you were hoping for a prequel you’ll be getting that too.
I’m also curious to see if the animation will be traditional 2D cell animation or 3D animation. Pacific Rim definitely owes a lot to Japanese giant robot animes, so I suspect it’s possible they’ll go this route. Where the series will premiere is another question, and I have a hard time seeing it on Comcast-owned NBC (who also owns Universal) — but Netflix has released a trailer for its first animated series Knights of Sidonia, and NBCUniversal and Legendary’s new television division could follow suit. As for the sequel, very little is known about what it’ll be about, but here is what we know… Buzzfeed got a chance to sit down with del Toro who told them who we should expect to return:
The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau -- but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast.
Possible spoilers below!
With the portal closed, there’s not as many giant monsters to fight. Zak Penn and del Toro are working on “very new, very crazy ideas” for the second film so how much more different can a sequel possibly get? Here’s an interesting question, if the aliens could open one portal — why can’t they open a second one?
Admittedly, that’s not very new or crazy but I’ll wager it’s the starting point. If you remember, del Toro did talk about the sequel with MTV last year:
We will have Gipsy 2.0 for sure. Second thing is you're gonna see a merging of Kaiju and Jaeger. And that is quite special. Just think about it for a second. We sent Gipsy to the other side, right? It exploded, but whatever remains stays there.
We've drifted with a Kaiju brain. Well, then start riffing on that and you'll get to something.
A Jaeger-Kaiju Hybrid? Sign me up! Imagine a battle between Gipsy Danger 2.0 and mutated Kaiju Gipsy Danger and try not to squeel! Also, Newt Geiszler, the crazy scientist played by Charlie Day, has drifted with a Kaiju — so could his mind have been affected by it? Will he be a villain in the next film?
Whatever Guillermo del Toro has planned, I’m happy as punch Pacific Rim 2 will premiere April 7, 2017.
