The casting for Marvel’s Daredevil Netflix series has been amazing — Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin were brilliant casting choices. Then last week we got word that Rosario Dawson has been cast, and now we have Hunger Games’ Elden Henson joining the Netflix series to play Foggy Nelson.
In case you have no idea who that is, Matt Murdock’s day job when he’s not fighting crime is, well, it’s fighting crime, but as an attorney in Hell’s Kitchen. Foggy Nelson is Murdock’s best friend and law partner, and usually provides the comic relief with a more laissez faire attitude compared to Murdock’s seriousness.
While we know Henson is Foggy, there’s still no word on who Rosario Dawson is playing, as her role is yet to be confirmed — which means it’s speculation time! What we have to go on is the official description of her character:
A dedicated young woman whose quest to heal the wounds of Hell's Kitchen brings Matt Murdock unexpectedly crashing into her life, while her own journey forever alters the course of his battle against the injustices of this broken city.
Whenever you think of Daredevil, you think of Elektra, and while Elektra is Greek and Dawson isn’t, this wouldn’t be a change I would mind. Having said that, I doubt that she’s been cast as her, because in the comics she teams up with Daredevil to fight off terrorists at a Greek embassy before she goes off to learn to be a ninja in Japan. Sure they can change her whole character, but I just don’t see it, and you would think Marvel would announce that Elektra has been cast.
The other character she could be playing would be either Milla Donovan or Karen Page. They were both non-powered love interests for Daredevil, who both came to a tragic end because of his enemies ,so it could be either, or they can amalgamation the characters. However, neither one was really dedicated to helping heal the wounds of Hell’s Kitchen.
An intriguing choice bouncing around the internet is Misty Knight, who was a former police officer but has gone on to being a private investigator after losing her arm in the line of duty. Interestingly, her arm gets replaced with a bionic one by Tony Stark, so that’s an interesting tie to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Knight isn’t a part of the Daredevil mythos, however, but she is part of the Iron Fist stories where the characters fall in love. Dawson is only credited as a guest star in Daredevil, so she could cross over into Iron Fist and be a member of The Defenders series (think Avengers).
My best guess is that Dawson will not be playing any of these characters. I have a sneaking suspicion that they’ll be creating a character solely to spur Murdock on to become Daredevil… although I’m really intrigued by the possibility of her playing Misty Knight.
Daredevil premieres on Netflix sometime in 2015.
