Director George Miller has returned to the franchise which carved his name indefinitely into the action genre. Mad Max: Fury Road is a re-imagining of the nomadic road warrior, who was played three times by Mel Gibson, from 1979-1985.
And the filmmaker insists that new star Tom Hardy has enough talent and charisma to make the role his own.
He said (via Indie Wire): “He's a rebooted Mad Max, but it's a new interpretation. We made it very clear from the outset that it would be crazy to try to impersonate what Mel Gibson had done, but Tom [like] Mel and Heath Ledger; these guys all have very similar kind of maleness, I find. I don't know, they somehow remind me of big catsthey're mesmerizing to look and be with, but you don't know what they're going to do at any moment."
With the movie’s release positioned in a highly competitive 2015 summer marketplace, the publicity machine is starting to rev up, with a number of images from the film, plus storyboards, released, from Entertainment Weekly.
While most of the images of course feature Hardy, there is also the first proper glimpses of Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa – complete with shaved head and robotic arm – who is described in a new synopsis as “a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.”
With these stills and EW cover story, we suspect a trailer could be forthcoming.
The second film in the franchise, The Road Warrior (1981), is comfortably the best in the series, and contains some of the best action sequences in movie history.
And according to Miller, the reboot aims to recapture the high octane action of that film.
He said: “I wanted to tell a linear story--a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes... In this crucible of very intense action, the characters are revealed.”
Check out the new synopsis below:
Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order... There's Max (played by TOM HARDY from The Dark Knight Rises), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos. And... Furiosa (played by CHARLIZE THERON from Prometheus), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
The film, long in post-production, opens May 15, 2015, a very competitive year for films, which include The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Star Wars: Episode VII, Mission: Impossible 5, and many others.
