Following their successful collaborations on Pineapple Express and This is the End, Seth Rogen and James Franco have re-teamed for The Interview.
However, this is no ordinary R-rated comedy, in fact the subject of the film is none other than North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.
The film, which has been penned and directed by Rogen and his writing partner Evan Goldberg, centers upon a talk show host (Franco) who is enlisted by the CIA to assassinate Jong-un, who has agreed to a television interview.
Ostensibly, this would be a controversial premise if the North Korean leader wasn’t so inherently ridiculous.
Here’s the trailer:
Still,The Interview has already drawn criticism from both U.S. and North Korean representatives, although it was revealed that sociopath and cinephile Jong-un would probably watch the film.
Upon hearing this news, Rogen tweeted: "Apparently Kim Jong-un plans on watching #TheInterview. I hope he likes it!!"
Of course, all this ‘controversy’ is serving as free publicity for the comedy, something which will no doubt be delighting its producers and stars.
Rogen and Goldberg, who wrote hit comedy Superbad while they were in high school, made their directorial debut with This is the End.
That apocalyptic comedy, which starred Rogen alongside Franco and Jonah Hill, grossed an impressive $126 million worldwide, from a budget of $32 million. Rogen and Goldberg were also behind Neighbors, as producers and star, which did very well, over $238 million worldwide, and counting.
Indeed, it is testament to the filmmaking duo’s success that they can get funding for a R-rated comedy which takes aim at a world leader, who isn’t exactly known for his sense of humor.
The Interview will hit screen this October.
