The Avengers franchise is undergoing some major surgery, and Doctor Strange is set to become the new linchpin of the series.
Marvel has already hired a director, Scott Derrickson, with production due to start next spring.
And while there has been much speculation as to who will play Strange, there hasn’t been any concrete news yet.
However, actor Edgar Ramirez, who is currently promoting Deliver Us From Evil, which was helmed by Derrickson, confirmed to IGN that he has spoke to the director about joining the cast.
In response to whether he and Derrickson had discussed his involvement in the blockbuster, he said: “We're talking. We've been talking.”
It is highly unlikely that the Zero Dark Thirty actor will play the title character, although it looks likely that he will appear in a supporting role.
Indeed, the studio has reportedly shortlisted a number of A-listers for the role of Strange, with three front runners: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, and Jared Leto.
Marvel producer Kevin Feige spoke to Total Film about the important role Strange will have in Phase: Three and how the franchise will evolve.
He said: “We’ve done the street-level heroes, and we’ve done the billionaire superheroes. We’ve now done the cosmic side withThor and Avengers and most obviously with (Guardians of the Galaxy), but there’s a whole other side of the Marvel comics, which is that supernatural side – the interdimensional side of the Marvel universe.
“Doctor Strange is, I believe, our entry point into that other realm, which has dozens of characters and storylines all of its own.”
