One of the most intelligent and daring filmmakers on the planet, Rian Johnson, is to write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII.
Deadline broke this momentous news and also revealed that the Looper helmer will also take charge of Episode: IX.
However, while TheWrap confirmed the news that Johnson would direct the eighth Star Wars film, it added that he would only write the ninth movie.
Disney owned Lucasfilm is expected to make an announcement in the next 24 hours.
Why is this so earth shatteringly important?
Well for one blockbuster films such as Star Wars are generally entrusted to directors who have the mental capacity and artistic fortitude of Chewbacca’s short-sighted grandmother, Nanabacca.
Indeed, while the next film, Star Wars: Episode VII, is being helmed by the well respected JJ Abrams, the Star Trek director is basically the filmmaking equivalent of a Granny Smith Apple – nice, sweet, and family-friendly.
However, Johnson, whose debut feature Brick was an uncompromising detective noir art film set in a high school, is a filmmaker who is innovative and exciting.
While the director has yet to confirm the news himself, he has already tweeted a clip from the Oscar winning movie The Right Stuff, which is a clever hint to how he must be feeling right now.
Stay tuned for more Star Wars news!
