A Geek's Reaction to the Final Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Trailer

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

I’m still not a fan of the lengthy titles they give these film s– I mean, Dawn of the Apes works just as well as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I suppose I’m just splitting hairs with that one, but honestly, if I’m looking for something wrong in these trailers then that’s pretty much all I have.

Two brand new full length trailers have been released for both domestic and international markets, and the look great. Here’s the domestic final trailer:

Final international trailer:

Like I said in my initial reaction to the first trailer, Rise of the Planet of the Apes felt a bit underwhelming. It was a vast improvement from the Tim Burton remake film (2001), but it still left me a little bit disappointed.

Dawn, however, looks fantastic and features my favorite actor of all time Gary Oldman, who should be in everything, if you ask me. This film very loosely follows Battle for the Planet of the Apes, and since this and its predecessor are what culminates in the original Planet of the Apes, you have to wonder what Fox has in store for the sequels after this.

Beyond the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Possible spoilers ahead!

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume Caesar and his band of apes are victorious even if it’s a tragic victory for Caesar. The great thing about this reboot of the series is that if we ever get to the events of Planet of the Apes, the fate of the characters in this film are up in the air. You know that Superman won’t die in a Superman movie and even if he does, he’ll be revived.

In these Planet of the Apes movies, however, you don’t know whether Caesar or Malcolm or any of the characters will survive because sooner or later, they’ll be skipping to the part where the apes rule the world and humanity has been reduced to slaves. We know the apes will win but not what it’ll cost.

So here’s where it gets really interesting director Matt Reeves is returning for the sequel which he will co-write with Mark Bomback and all signs point to that film being called Planet of the Apes. In the original Charlton Heston film, a spaceship named the Icarus is sent off to the stars and strands our heroes on the planet of the apes so how are they going to square that hole in the sequel? Go back and rewatch Rise of the Planet of the Apes and you can see news reports of a mission to Mars of a ship named the Icarus in the background which is subsequently reported as lost a few scenes later.

How’s that for laying elements for the third film? Of course this time, we the audience know that Taylor and his crew land on Earth so I wonder what elements they’ll be keeping and what elements they’ll change from the original.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes premieres July 11, 2014.
