Ever since the Marvel Studios started making their own film,s beginning with The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, one character has always been on Marvel Exec Kevin Feige’s mind — and it’s strange: Doctor Stephen Strange, to be exact.
With the announcement of Scott Derrickson directing the film for Marvel’s Phase: Three, we’ve been wondering who will write the film and who will play the titular character. Deadline is reporting that Jon Spaihts will be writing the film and he himself has confirmed it via Twitter. Spaihts is basically known for writing the first draft of Prometheus that Damon Lindelof rewrote. I have serious problems with that film’s story, but I don’t know whether it was Spaihts’ fault or Lindelof’s. Spaiht doesn’t seem to have too much professional experience, so it’s way too early to tell if this raises a yellow flag for me.
That leaves us asking who will don the cape of the sorcerer supreme? Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Johnny Depp have been names thrown around in the past along with Mads Mikkelsen. Newer names on that short list include Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy.
Jared Leto seems to be the oddest choice on this list, I really can’t see him in the role. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is working on Sandman for DC Comics and Warner Bros., so I doubt he’s really in the running. Depp would make a fantastic choice, but can Marvel afford him? His last few films haven’t fared that well in theaters, but he’ll still be somewhat expensive. Mads Mikkelsen, Cumberbatch, and Hardy are all excellent choices but of those three Cumberbatch would be my preference because his voice just sounds like he can control the mystic arts.
As for which era Derrickson and Spaihts will be looking for inspiration, Derrickson had this to say about his interest in a Doctor Strange film to JoBlo:
I think when you consider the work that I've done it makes sense that he'd be my favorite comic book character, at least in the Marvel universe. Probably the only comic character in that mainstream world that I'm suited to. I feel such an affinity for the character and the story and the ambition of those comics, especially the original Stan Lee and Steve Ditko "Strange Tales" -- I think those are my favorite of all of them. The entire history of the comics is extraordinary.
While no released date has been set, I’ll hedge my bets and hazard that Doctor Strange will be released in either 2016 or 2017.
