Sequels to Star Trek, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the Return of Axel Foley in 2016

Paramount lays out an ambitious plan for the next three years.

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

Everyone knows that 2015 is going to be an insane year for movies. With sequels to the Avengers, the return of Star Wars Episode VII, Fast and Furious, and Jurassic World, it’s going to be a veritable bloodbath at the box office. But 2016 is starting to shape up to be just as relentless, with sequels of their own, and the return of a familiar face.

The news comes after executives screened sizzle reels at CineEurope in Barcelona, and Paramount executive Edward Ryan didn’t disappoint in showing attendees what the studio had planned over the next two to three years. The news came almost as an afterthought, after Ryan previewed a trio of tentpole releases for 2014 which included Michael Bay’s soft reboot Transformers: Age of Extinction starring Mark Wahlberg, Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson, and finally the reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles starring Meghan Fox as April O’Neil (and executive produced by Bay). Add to that the premiere of Bay’s pandemic TV drama The Last Ship on TNT, and it’s shaping up to be a serious Michael Bay summer.

But Ryan didn’t stop there, saying as he laid out an equally ambitious premiere date for 2016, which includes release dates are being staked out for Star Trek 3, G.I. Joe returns for a third run at the box office, Transformers 5, and Eddie Murphy’s return reprising his role as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop. Hansel and Gretel 2  is also coming (did it really do that well?), and Paranormal Activity 5 will continue it’s “lather, rinse, repeat” run of found footage horror. There’s even going to be a new spin on Ben Hur.

And even though Bay is at the helm for his fourth Transformers summer film, the word on the street is that this is going to likely be it for him, and Paramount is looking to go in a different direction to helm the fifth installment. And we already know that with J.J. Abrams now thoroughly entrenched in the Star Wars universe, Roberto Orci will take the con for Star Trek 3.

Meanwhile, Universal has decided to delay?the next chapter of the Bourne series, which will be the second go around for Jeremy Renner, reprising his role as Aaron Cross. That film has moved into a?July 15, 2016 release slot. Ugh. Add to that X-Men Apocalypse, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (going up against Captain America 3, for now), Finding Dory, Avatar 2, and rumors of Pirates of the Caribbean 5 (although Disney doesn’t seem to be feelin’ it, thank God), and man, I don’t know if I’m going to survive the next three summers of movie going. It’s going to be an epic run of movies, that’s for sure. Too bad you can’t just buy a season ticket!
