Some rumors are just rumors where one source reveals a tidbit of information. Other rumors have been leaked from so many different sources that it would be a surprise if it wasn’t true.
A Star Wars example of the former is something like Simon Pegg will have a secret role in Star Wars: Episode VII. A latter rumor is like Lawrence Kasdan will be writing a Boba Fett spinoff film– and now there’s a new rumor that’s cropped up.
Schmoesknow.com has learned from a source corroborating what we reported back in January that Kasdan is indeed writing the Boba Fett film. Schmoesknow also brought up a proposed release schedule that was accidentally leaked by Hasbro, locking in the Boba Fett movie for 2016. These two rumors can’t be true together since Gareth Edwards will be working on the Star Wars spinoff for the 2016 release with Gary Whitta writing that one. Either Kasdan is writing the film for either a 2018 or 2020 release, or Whitta is writing it for the 2016 release with Edwards. I don’t think we can have it both ways.
My hunch is that the proposed release schedule is wrong, and the Kasdan rumor is true. He wrote the film that introduced Boba Fett (and Yoda, to be fair… another rumored character to have a film about him), and we’ve heard that Fett film was being discussed at a Disney executive breakfast in April. It feels right to have Kasdan write that screenplay.
Does that leave Josh Trank to direct the Boba Fett spinoff for 2018? Maybe — don’t forget that Simon Kinberg has also been slated to write another standalone film and no writer was attached to Trank’s announcement.
Who do we at Doddle think should direct a Boba Fett film? Joe Johnston. He’s been eyeing a Boba Fett film for the last few years, even before Lucasfilm was bought by Disney, and the possibility of new Star Wars films was within grasp. Latino Review also heard from a source back in January that Johnston is on top of the list to direct the film and that it would have more of a western vibe to it.
It is Latino Review, so have your salt grain ready.
Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters December 18, 2015 and the Gareth Edwards directed Star Wars spinoff is slated for a December 16, 2016 release.
