Following David Fincher’s departure from Sony’s Steve Jobs biopic, the director is now linked with Red Sparrow over at Fox.
Deadline has reported that the filmmaker and actress Rooney Mara, who worked together on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Social Network, are both in talks over the spy thriller.
In fact, the acrimony between Fincher and Sony started during the production of remake The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and finally came to a head while the Fight Club helmer was considering the Jobs film for the studio.
However, despite the director’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s Swedish thriller performing below expectations, it is woefully underrated. Mara’s performance in the film is excellent, although admittedly not any stronger than Noomi Rapace’s in the original, with the actress successfully pulling off a Swedish accent, something her co-star Daniel Craig could not.
And now that the sequel looks like it will never happen, the director and the actress look set to reunite on spy thriller Red Sparrow.
In fact Mara’s linguistic skills could come in handy, as the star will almost certainly be adopting a Russian twang in the film.
Screenwriter Eric Singer (American Hustle) has been tasked with adapting Jason Matthews’ book, which interestingly is set in present day, Putin-led Russia, rather than the cold war era.
Darren Aronosfky was previously attached to the project, but has since dropped out, clearing the way for fellow pessimistic genius Fincher.
Although, the Se7en director has never helmed a spy film before, he is more than familiar with the thriller genre, having made some of the best nail-biters of the last 20 years.
Indeed, his next project, Gone Girl, which will be released in October, was adapted from hugely successful crime novel by author Gillian Flynn.
Stay tuned for more Red Sparrow developments.
